On the island of Bali, home to one of the few non-South Asian, indigenous Hindu communities of the world, dance theatre is a central part of theological constructions. Bali is famous worldwide for having a unique, rich tradition of dance theatre immersed in the island’s particular brand of Hinduism, incorporating Śaivite, Buddhist, and indigenous animist influences. For many South Asian Hindu communities, this is an often forgotten corner of our world, and in this essay, I hope to inspire an admiration for our Balinese coreligionists.
